A BMW fan does not say "the M3". They say "the E30", "the E46" or "the G80", and those three characters are enough to date the car, place the person and sometimes start an argument. So before choosing a BMW piece, it pays to read that code. It is simpler than it sounds.

The chassis code, the real ID card

BMW names each model generation with an internal code: one letter and two digits. The letter places the era. E codes cover the older generations, F codes the 2010s, G codes current production.

Among enthusiasts, that code carries far more weight than the sales name. Two M3s can have almost nothing in common, and the code says which one you love.

E30 and E46: the M3s people miss

The E30. The very first M3, launched in 1986. A car born for touring car racing, boxy, light, with its flared arches. It is the purists' M3, and the one that ages best on clothing: its silhouette reads in a single line.

The E46. The M3 of the 2000s, with its naturally aspirated straight six. For a whole generation it is the reference M3, the one on the bedroom poster and in the first racing games. It speaks to people who are now between thirty and forty-five.

Same family for the M5 V10: the E60 generation, whose ten-cylinder engine remains a one-off in the history of the sports saloon.

G80, G82, G87: today's BMWs

The G80 and G82. The current M3 and M4. Their big vertical kidney grille split enthusiasts when it came out, and that is exactly what makes it a subject: you love it or you question it, but you recognise it.

The G87. The current M2, compact and wide, which many see as the heir to the E30 spirit. It is the bridge between the two eras.

Need Money For BMW: the slogan, not the car

Alongside the illustrated pieces, there is one that shows no generation at all: Need Money For BMW. The desire said with humour, without taking sides between E30 and G80.
