Car phone cases: what the background really does to the design

Coque iPhone auto : ce que le fond change vraiment au dessin

Phone case · Read 6 min

Almost nobody looks at the background of the case. You look at the design, you click, and on unboxing you find the artwork getting lost on the back of the phone. Yet the background is what decides everything: whether the design reads from a metre away or only in the hand. Here is the order to choose in.

Start with your model, not with the design

This is the most ordinary and the most expensive mistake: falling for a design, then discovering the case does not exist for your phone. Check first, choose second.

Our cases cover the iPhone 11 up to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. But the exact list depends on the case: the most recent ones in the catalogue offer the iPhone 17 Air and the 16e, while the others reach further back and include the iPhone 13 mini, 12 mini and 12 Pro.

The habit that prevents the return: open the product page, unfold the Model menu, and check yours is there before looking at anything else. If your iPhone is missing from one case, it may well be listed on another from the same world.

The shortcut
Settings, General, About: the exact name of your iPhone is written there. Two seconds, and you stop picking the wrong line in the menu.

Transparent, white or black: three different results

When a case offers the choice, the background is not one more matter of taste. It changes how the design reads, and it changes what people see of your phone.

Transparent. It lets the colour of the iPhone show through, and the artwork seems to float on the surface. This is the most discreet and most modern result, the one that suits a collage or an airy graphic. On the other hand, a light design on a light iPhone fades away: avoid it if your phone is white or cream.

White. Maximum contrast. A black line, a number, a car silhouette: everything stands out, even from a distance. It is the background that gives the most presence, and it is also the one that marks fastest in a pocket full of keys.

Black. The design appears through what it lights up rather than what it covers. Night shots, headlights, neon and dark liveries all gain from it. An entirely black graphic, on the other hand, disappears.

On a transparent background the collage floats, and the colour of the phone stays visible.

Two families, and only one offers the choice

One detail of the catalogue explains a great deal: out of the 70 cases in the collection, only 9 offer a choice of background in white, black or transparent. The other 61 exist in a single finish, the one the artwork was composed for.

That is not a shortcoming. A worked illustration, a vintage collage, a historic livery: the background is part of the design, and varying it would spoil it. The cases with three colours are the ones whose artwork is graphic enough to carry all three, typically a number, a sticker or a line drawing.

In practice: if choosing your background matters to you, start from the cases built around a number or a sticker. If you want the best image, let whoever composed it decide the background.

Which world: a marque, a driver, or an era

Once the model is checked, only one real question is left, and it is settled like a clothing choice.

A marque. The clearest and most durable way in. Ferrari is the largest family with 19 cases, ahead of Porsche with 14, then Mercedes and McLaren with 7 each, and Audi with 4. A body shape does not switch sides from one season to the next.

A driver. Eight Formula 1 cases, carrying numbers you recognise without reading the name. It is the choice with the strongest immediate effect, with the same caveat as for a garment: one season can change everything.

An era. Seven vintage cases, and it is the most underrated category. A silhouette from the sixties or an archive collage ages better than a recent supercar, because it has already survived forty years of fashion.

Why it is the safest car gift

As the holidays approach, the case has an advantage no garment has: there is no size to guess. There is only one thing to know, the iPhone model, and you find it by glancing at the person's phone while they talk to you.

It is also the only object in the house you hold for three hours a day. A poster is seen when you walk into the room, a hoodie is worn in winter, a case is seen at every café table.

The one thing to watch is the same as for any phone accessory: check the model before ordering, not after. And if the person has just changed phones, wait until you know the new one.

Where to start

Three ways in, depending on what you are after.

Frequently asked questions

Which iPhone models are compatible?

From the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The exact list varies from one case to another: some offer the iPhone 17 Air and the 16e, others reach back to the iPhone 13 mini, 12 mini and 12 Pro. Check the Model menu on the product page before ordering.

Do you make cases for Android or Samsung?

No. The collection is iPhone only at this stage.

Why do some cases have no colour choice?

Out of the 70 cases in the collection, 9 come in white, black and transparent. For the other 61, the background is part of the composition of the artwork and is therefore not varied.

Transparent or white, which shows the design best?

White gives maximum contrast and reads from a distance. Transparent is more discreet and lets the colour of the iPhone show, but a light design fades on it if your phone is white.

Which case do you give without knowing someone's taste?

A marque rather than a driver, and preferably an older silhouette: those designs do not depend on a championship season. All that is left is to spot their iPhone model.

A case is chosen in this order: the iPhone model, the background, then the design. Done the other way round, you fall for artwork that does not exist for your phone, or that disappears once it is on it. The model, the background, the design.
