Interlagos, the circuit that refuses a quiet race

The São Paulo Grand Prix runs from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November. Kimi Antonelli has been champion since last Sunday, the top of the drivers' table is frozen, and it changes very little: Interlagos has never needed something at stake to produce a race people still talk about twenty years later.

Four point three kilometres, and everything happens fast

The Autódromo José Carlos Pace measures 4.309 km. It is one of the shortest tracks on the calendar, and that is the first reason for the chaos: a lap takes a little over a minute and ten seconds, so traffic is constant. A leader catches backmarkers before he has found his rhythm.

Second reason: the circuit runs anticlockwise, which very few tracks do. The loads switch sides, the neck works the wrong way round, and drivers finish Sunday with aches they get nowhere else.

Third reason: the elevation. The track climbs and drops constantly, and it opens with a downhill left-right, the Senna S, which is the main overtaking point. You arrive fast, you brake with the load shifting, and that is where races are decided.

Fourth reason, the least predictable: São Paulo. The late afternoon storm is a local habit, not an accident. A car set up for dry weather can be caught out within a lap. The circuit layouts of the grid are in the Circuits collection.

The date
The circuit opened on 12 May 1940. Since 1985 it has carried the name of José Carlos Pace, the Brazilian driver killed in a plane crash in 1977.

1991: Senna wins at home with no gearbox

Eight seasons in Formula 1, two world titles, and still no win in Brazil. On 24 March 1991, Ayrton Senna starts from pole in his McLaren-Honda.

His gearbox begins to fail without anyone knowing. He loses fourth. Nigel Mansell closes in, then breaks down himself and retires on lap sixty-one. In the closing laps Senna has also lost fifth and third. He has sixth left, and he has to take the slow corners in sixth, on the edge of stalling, while Riccardo Patrese closes on him.

He wins by 2.9 seconds. The effort leaves him with cramp and a fever. He cannot get out of the car on his own, he is lifted out, driven to the podium in the medical car, and can barely raise the trophy. It is his first home win, in his eighth season.

2008: world champion for a handful of seconds

Final round of the season, 2 November 2008. Felipe Massa has to win and hope Lewis Hamilton finishes sixth or lower. A Brazilian can be world champion again, which has not happened since Senna in 1991.

Rain arrives on lap sixty-three. Timo Glock stays on dry tyres and climbs the order. Hamilton runs wide on lap sixty-nine and loses fifth place. Massa crosses the line as the winner, and meanwhile the final lap is playing out behind him.

In the last corners Glock has no grip left on a wet track. Hamilton passes him and finishes fifth. The Ferrari garage, which had started celebrating the title, stops dead. One point in it. At 23 years and 300 days, Hamilton becomes the youngest world champion in history.

That record has fallen twice since: Sebastian Vettel in 2010, and last Sunday in Mexico City, where Kimi Antonelli took it down to 20 years and 68 days.

2021: started tenth, won

Hamilton sets the fastest Friday time, then is excluded from the session for a rear wing that fails scrutineering. He starts the Saturday sprint from the back, climbs to fifth, and on top of that takes a five-place penalty for exceeding his allocation of engine parts.

So he lines up tenth on Sunday. He wins, ahead of Max Verstappen, who was leading the championship at the time. It is one of the most argued-over recoveries of the decade, and it happened here.

Three races, three different scripts, one four-kilometre lap. That is what you are buying when you watch Interlagos on a Sunday afternoon.

This weekend, and what is still at stake

Format change this year: no sprint race. It is the first time since the format was introduced in 2021 that Interlagos has not hosted one. Three practice sessions, qualifying on Saturday, the race on Sunday over 71 laps.

The drivers' championship is closed, the rest is not. Four drivers are covered by sixteen points for second place: Verstappen 261, Hamilton 259, George Russell 250, Charles Leclerc 245. Among the teams, Mercedes leads on 630 points to Ferrari's 504, with 172 points still available: the title is not sealed yet.

After São Paulo there is Las Vegas on 21 November, Qatar on the 29th, and Abu Dhabi on 6 December. The whole grid is in the Formula 1 collection.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix?

From Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November 2026, at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace. The race runs on Sunday over 71 laps.

Is there a sprint race in Brazil this year?

No. It is the first time since the format was introduced in 2021 that Interlagos has not hosted a sprint. The weekend follows the classic format: three practice sessions, qualifying on Saturday, the race on Sunday.

Why does Interlagos produce so many chaotic races?

A short 4.309 km lap that creates constant traffic, an anticlockwise direction, sharp elevation changes with the downhill Senna S as the main overtaking point, and São Paulo weather, where a late afternoon storm can catch out a dry-set-up car within a single lap.

Who was José Carlos Pace?

A Brazilian Formula 1 driver, killed in a plane crash in 1977. The circuit, which opened on 12 May 1940, has carried his name since 1985. The public still calls it Interlagos, after the district.

Is the 2026 championship already decided?

Among the drivers yes, Kimi Antonelli has been champion since the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November. Among the teams no: Mercedes leads on 630 points to Ferrari's 504, with 172 points still to be awarded.

A four-kilometre lap, opened before Formula 1 itself existed, run the wrong way round and able to be turned upside down by one storm. The title is settled, the race is not. The gearbox, the rain, the final corner.
