The cars of GTA 6, and the real ones behind them

GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026, three weeks from now. It is set in Leonida, around Vice City, with Jason and Lucia. And as in every GTA, no car carries its real name: no logo, no badge, no manufacturer label. Which has never stopped anyone recognising the models. Here is what the trailers showed, and what is really underneath.

The hero car is a Chevelle

In the long gameplay sequence revealed in late August, Jason and Lucia break into a red muscle car that clearly serves as the pair's signature machine. Chris Tsui, writing for Jalopnik on 28 August, described it as "seemingly inspired by the Chevy Chevelle". Fan databases go further and tie it to a 1972 Chevelle Malibu under the name Declasse Tulip, though they label that role as reported rather than confirmed.

The choice makes sense. The Chevelle SS is the American big block in its most direct form: a long bonnet, two doors, and an engine that does all the staging on its own. That is exactly the register GTA has used since Vice City. The same cars sit in the Vintage Cars collection, Chevelle SS 396 and 454 included.

Worth noting
None of these matches come from Rockstar. The studio never comments on its models. Everything below comes from community databases watching the trailers frame by frame.

The dictionary of invented brands

GTA's fictional manufacturers stay stable from one game to the next, and the mapping has become common knowledge. Here it is, as the GTABase database records it for the series as a whole.

Grotti for Ferrari. Pegassi for Lamborghini, and Ducati on the motorcycle side. Pfister for Porsche. Progen for McLaren. Truffade for Bugatti. Übermacht for BMW. Benefactor for Mercedes. Obey for Audi. Dewbauchee for Aston Martin. Ocelot for Jaguar and Lotus.

On the volume side: Vapid for Ford, Declasse for Chevrolet, Albany for Cadillac, Annis for Nissan, Dinka for Honda, Lampadati for Maserati and Alfa Romeo, BF for Volkswagen, and Coil for Tesla and Rimac.

Applied to the vehicles already catalogued, it produces very precise matches: the Progen Emerus on the McLaren Senna, the Grotti Bestia GTS on the Ferrari FF and GTC4Lusso, the Pfister Neon on a blend of Taycan, 918 Spyder and 992.2 911. The Pfister Neon is the kind of car that has its own shelf here, in Need Money For Porsche.

What the trailers let us see

A red BMW E30 style convertible, which Jalopnik identifies by its in-game name, the Sentinel. It is the first car shown being driven. The E30 has its own place in the BMW range, t-shirt and phone case included.

A black saloon in Lucia's big chase, which "looks a whole lot like" a Mercedes E-Class W212, called the Schafter in game.

The police car moves to a Dodge Charger base, where it was modelled on a Ford Taurus in GTA V. A detail of atmosphere that counts: the sound and the silhouette of a chase change completely.

In traffic, Jalopnik picks out lookalikes of the Dodge Challenger and Charger, Audi TT, Ram 1500, tenth generation Honda Accord, Camaro convertible, Range Rover, Chevrolet Suburban, Toyota RAV4, BMW X5 and Corvette C7.

And in the night street race, a Nissan Skyline GT-R R32, a Porsche Cayman, and two supercars the writer cautiously ties to a Lamborghini Diablo and a Ferrari SF90. It is the sequence closest to what the JDM collection tells: nineties Japan is still the default vocabulary of night racing.

How many, and what changes at the wheel

GTABase records 311 vehicles to date and says it expects at least 300 at launch. That is a site count, not an official figure. The same records point to heavier handling than GTA V, higher top speeds, denser traffic and narrower roads. And an overturned car no longer flips itself back by steering.

The rest is detail that changes everything: a working fuel gauge, charging points for electric cars, different security levels on parked vehicles. Stealing a car is no longer one button: you break a window, work a slim jim, and on recent models bypass an electronic system. Garages can be bought, and you start with three personal vehicle slots, one for Jason, one for Lucia, one free.

On the workshop side: mod shops spread across Leonida, nitrous, and the return of Pay & Spray to repaint a car and break a chase. A wreck can be recovered for a fee through an in-game app, otherwise it ends up at the impound.

The real novelty: racing on a circuit

Jalopnik points to an addition that did not exist in this form: closed circuit racing, with a start, a layout and a field. Until now GTA raced in the city, at red lights and down alleyways. Moving onto a track is an admission that the game also speaks to the people who watch Grands Prix on Sundays.

Which makes for a busy winter if you like cars: a championship ending, a game out three weeks later, and a desk where the two meet. It is the one thing we make that is literally used to play: the desk mats, including a Skyline GT-R R34 that lands well.

Frequently asked questions

When does GTA 6 come out?

On 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The date was reconfirmed by Take-Two in February 2026. No PC version has been officially announced to date.

What is the main car in GTA 6?

A red muscle car that Jason and Lucia steal in the August 2026 gameplay sequence. Jalopnik describes it as inspired by the Chevrolet Chevelle. Community databases call it the Declasse Tulip and tie it to a 1972 Chevelle Malibu, without confirmation from Rockstar.

Why don't GTA cars use their real names?

Rockstar uses neither the names nor the badges of real manufacturers. The studio invents brands that stay stable from game to game, Grotti for Ferrari or Pfister for Porsche, and draws bodies that often blend two or three models.

How many cars are there in GTA 6?

GTABase records 311 to date and expects at least 300 at launch. These are site counts, built from the trailers, not figures released by Rockstar.

Does the driving change from GTA V?

According to community records, yes: heavier handling, higher top speeds, denser traffic, a working fuel gauge, and an overturned car that no longer rights itself. Closed circuit racing is new.

Rockstar has never put a real badge on a body panel, and that is exactly why recognising the cars has been part of the game for twenty years. In three weeks we will know whether the Chevelle holds up. The Chevelle, the E30, the Skyline.
